UN Report: Gaza War Leaves Strip "Uninhabitable," Requires Billions for Recovery

In a report released today, the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) describes the devastating impact of the ongoing Israeli war on the Gaza Strip. The report highlights that the conflict has rendered Gaza "almost uninhabitable," displacing 85% of its population and causing extensive damage to infrastructure. It estimates that the reconstruction efforts will require tens of billions of dollars and decades to reverse the destruction. Gaza's GDP has plummeted by 24%, and it may take until 2092 to restore pre-war levels. The report emphasizes that Gaza's economic challenges stem from decades of occupation and blockade, urging realistic strategies to unlock its growth potential. UNCTAD economists warn that prolonged military operations will exacerbate the already dire situation, emphasizing the urgent need for action to address Gaza's humanitarian crisis.
